POPULAR COLLEGE DRUGS
We understand college can be a difficult time filled with many stressors and temptations. College culture can deceptively nurture substance abuse without the individual knowing it. For instance, alcohol can be quite common in college. Going out 2-3 times a week can be justifiable, but when these 2-3 times are center around binge drinking, it can be dangerous. With a culture that displays regular drinking as normal, it leads to people harming their bodies and developing dependence unknowingly. Apart from alcohol, many other drugs can be routine in everyday life of a college student. There is an endless struggle to balance social life, health, and academics. To help with studying, a surprising amount of students use amphetamines like Adderall and Vyvanse to help stay focused and awake during long hours of studying. This can lead to a variety of health effects, and in many cases, students begin to rely on these drugs more often developing a dependence. Marijuana is a social drug and can help ease anxiety and stress. The mental pressure of class performance along with the stress of balancing social life leads Marijuana to be a popular drug. But, when students use this as a coping mechanism to their problems of stress and anxiety, it can start to cause adverse effects. Smoking before going to class or studying can have severe negative effects on cognitive function, especially memory – both short term and long term. Additionally, if an individual chooses to smoke marijuana to alleviate their problems instead of addressing them head-on, it can cause more problems down the road. Without the proper techniques to manage acute and chronic stress, students can become susceptible to dependence. Many students who smoke regularly might begin to lose the euphoric effects of the drug and turn to harder alternatives like barbiturates.
Benzodiazpines have become an alarmingly popular new drug for college students. With the variety of pressures involved in college, many turn to drugs like Xanax to help alleviate these stresses. These type of drugs are extremely addictive and can have severe consequences like memory and attention impairments. Benzodiazpines lead to emotional instability, irritability, loss of motivation and sometimes even death. Benzodiazepines have a high risk of overdose, but when bought illegally, this risk is much more significant. Often, Xanax bars are sometimes laced with a chemical known as Fentanyl – which can kill someone with the amount of just a few grains.
HOW WE HELP
If you are a current college student struggling with an addiction, we can help. Our specialized treatment help students get their life back on track. Before entering treatment, we help facilitate any paperwork or any processes needed to take a temporary leave of absence from the University. Here at Coalition, we don’t want your educational progress to be the factor holding you back from seeking treatment. There are systems in place to attend treatment without any educational repercussions. Addiction will have a negative impact on performance. Educational decline due to substance abuse is a primary reason for academic discharges from universities. The process of taking a leave of absence is much easier than re-admitting to the college, so we suggest getting help as soon as possible. Apart from helping students with the medical leave process, we help set themselves up for sober success while back on campus. We have the relationships, tools, and resources available to set our clients up with sober housing on campus and sober communities and clubs. We also try to connect our clients with any Coalition Recovery alumni on campus. Once again, building an environment of like-minded individuals help a person stay focused, on track, and sober. Along with connecting our clients to resources on campus, we build a relationship with university physicians and psychiatrists. In doing this, we can establish a continuous treatment plan that does not end after leaving our facility. By these relationships, your on-campus doctor will understand where you are coming from and will be better able to assist you while in college. Recovery is a lifelong process that takes a community and effort to nurture it. If you are a prior college student and are looking to get back to higher education, we can help you too. We know college can be a challenging time, and substance issues may or may not have been a factor in your departure. Either way, our case manager will assist you all while in treatment, to guide you through the steps of reaching your goal. For instance, if you wanted to re-admit to a university college, we will be able to walk you through of the application process. This can be anything from helping you with your essay to contacting the university itself. With certain universities, they may have special programs for recovering students. We can help you apply for these applications and help you assess the best road for you to travel and reach your goals.
