Alcohol addiction is one of the leading causes of death worldwide, affecting not just the individual, but also families and society at large. Regular consumption of alcohol does long-term damage to one’s physical and mental health. If you or someone you love is struggling with alcohol addiction, hope and healing are always available at Coalition Recovery’s alcoholism treatment program.
Alcohol addiction is often accompanied by repressed trauma, co-occurring mental health disorders, and other ailments. For a full recovery, it is important to treat the body’s chemical dependence on alcohol as well as teach the brain to learn effective coping mechanisms. Alcoholism Treatment Program: Stages of Alcohol Addiction Treatment
The treatment and recovery timeline for alcohol addiction is different for everyone. Depending on the individual’s case history, the healthcare provider may recommend inpatient or outpatient treatment.
Regardless of whichever option you opt for, treatment for alcohol addiction can be roughly summarized in four stages:
1. Getting Help/Crisis Intervention
The majority of people who are struggling with an alcohol use disorder do not think that they need treatment. Also, drinking at social gatherings is so normalized in our culture that it is easy to miss the early warning signs. Thus, choosing to get help and seeking professional treatment for alcoholism is the first and most important step in addiction recovery.
Moreover, binge drinking can lead to complications such as alcohol poisoning that require immediate hospitalization. If you are worried about someone’s health and safety, we can dispatch a team for crisis intervention.
2. Detox Phase
Once the alcohol addiction treatment is underway, the client goes through a process of detoxication, where the body is cleansed of the harmful substance and slowly learns to readjust. Quitting cold turkey on one’s own is not recommended, as the withdrawal symptoms may be quite severe, and in rare cases, even lead to seizures.
However, in a clinical environment, the patient’s vital signs are carefully monitored by doctors and healthcare professionals, and medications may be provided if necessary. The client can begin their recovery in a safe and comfortable environment that greatly minimizes the pain of withdrawal.
3. Rehabilitation and Abstinence
After the client stabilizes, therapy and counseling can commence treating the root causes of addiction. Most rehab facilities, including Coalition Recovery, use evidence-based therapies (EBT) such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) to unlearn toxic thought patterns, uncover underlying issues, and develop healthier habits. Clients may also be expected to attend support group meetings, family counseling sessions, and other activities on a case-by-case basis.
Throughout this period, the client is expected to abstain from alcohol, develop new hobbies and interests, and slowly readjust to the community.
4. Aftercare Planning: Maintaining Sobriety
Addiction recovery is often a lifelong process. With the right medical help, emotional support, and self-care resources, clients can maintain their sobriety, rebuild their lives and find fulfillment. Comprehensive aftercare planning and ongoing support minimizes the chances of a relapse and ensures that if needed, help is only a call away.
Sometimes clients may opt for sober living residences where they can help peers who are in similar stages of recovery, develop crucial life skills, and improve their self-awareness and communication skills.
Alcohol Addiction Treatment at Coalition Recovery
For the last six years, Coalition Recovery has helped both students and adults to recover from their drug and/or alcohol addictions and go on to live happier and more fulfilling lives.
With a strong focus on medication-assisted treatment (MAT), evidence-based practices, and aftercare planning, we guide our clients at every step of the recovery process. Our work with different universities has also raised awareness about substance use on campus, reaching out to students and young adults who may otherwise be too afraid to seek help.
