Dr. Barnett received her undergraduate education from Birmingham-Southern College. She became a Medical Technologist, then proceeded to medical school at the University of South Alabama in Mobile, Alabama. She received the Department of Radiology Research Award, and the Eugene Bondurant Award for Excellence in Psychiatry. For her psychiatric training, she completed an internship and residency at the University of South Florida in Tampa, Florida. After obtaining board certification in General Psychiatry, she obtained board certifications in Geriatric Psychiatry, Addiction Psychiatry, and Forensic Psychiatry.
She has been in the private practice of psychiatry and was the Medical Director for the Agency for Community Treatment Services in Tampa for nearly five years. ACTS serves persons with addictions and co-occurring disorders. She conducted a clinic at Tri-County Services for the treatment of persons with co-occurring disorders for nearly ten years. She incorporates evidence-based practices in her management of addictive disorders. She has been certified as a Medical Review Officer.
Valerie Andersen, Psy.D. joined Coalition Recovery’s team in August 2018. As an experienced clinician, licensed psychologist, and clinical director, Dr. Val celebrates and promotes Coalition Recovery’s renowned focus on fostering clients towards leading flourishing and healthy programs of long-term recovery. Trained in Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART), The Daring Way/Rising Strong (shame resilience) and with her philosophical roots stemming from positive psychology, Dr. Val believes in the strengths and potential of every client and team member she has the opportunity to work with. She utilizes her signature strengths of curiosity, kindness, and perspective to help others identify and build upon their unique set of strengths to live within the upper reaches of their potential. Knowing the disease of addiction personally, Dr. Val is grateful for the opportunity to help young and emerging adults develop a fulfilling lifestyle of recovery.
In her role as Coalition Recovery’s Clinical Director, Dr. Andersen oversees the clinical service development and delivery, and does her part to ensure that Coalition Recovery’s culture of transparency, authenticity, and collaborative leadership are cultivated daily. Prior to joining Coalition Recovery, Dr. Andersen held a variety of leadership roles within the addiction field, to include serving within Clinical and Executive Director positions for The Right Step and Promises Austin and more recently as Clinical Director at Tranquil Shores and Mending Fences in Ocala, Florida.
Along with addictions, Rachel specializes in trauma, attachment and family systems, which she believes is key to ensuring a client’s long-term success in recovery. She is trained in Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART), which is like EMDR yet often considered to be more efficient in treating PTSD. She has also been trained by Jeff and Debra Jay in their Love First® model of Intervention. Rachel’s other counseling modalities include motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, and interpersonal process therapy. Rachel’s extensive professional background in business, finance, coaching and mental health serve to enhance her client’s successful outcomes in recovery, their careers and family relationships.
